The Quantum Mechanics Solver uniquely illustrates the application of quantum mechanical concepts to various fields of modern physics. Be who you are and be proud: Brittney Griner, intersectional invisibility and digital possibilities.

This article examines current professional basketball player, Brittney Griner, and the ways in which her personal and athletic lives are represented on social media. In particular, her visibility and posts on her public Instagram account allow for a consideration of the digital possibilities for social change by lesbian sporting celebrities. This analysis interrogates these possibilities through a close reading of several Instagram posts regarding Griner’s romantic relationship with fellow basketball star, Glory Johnson. This article ultimately argues that Griner’s Instagram profile helps challenge the intersectional invisibility of Black lesbian sporting celebrities and discusses the implications of this visibility for similarly positioned LGB youth.

Practical Local Geoid Modelling of Benin City, Nigeria from Gravimetric Observations Using the Modif

The geometric heights obtained from GNSS observations cannot be used for engineering works as they are not reduced to the geoid. This study presents practical local geoid modelling from gravimetric observations using the modified Stokes integral for engineering applications in Benin City. A total of 52 points were observed with GNSS receivers and a gravimeter to respectively obtain their positions and absolute gravity values. The theoretical gravity values of the points were computed on the Clarke 1880 ellipsoid to obtain their local gravity anomalies. The modified Stokes integral was applied to compute the geoid heights of the points. The combined topographic effect was applied to the computed geoid heights of the points to obtain their precise geoid heights. The mean of the precise geoid heights of the points was computed to obtain the local gravimetric geoid model of the study area. The determined geoid model was validated for its reliability as well as the accuracy using the RMSE index. It is recommended that the use of assumed, as well as handheld GPS receiver heights for engineering works should be totally abolished as this study has established the local geoid model of Benin City.

Comparison of Three Gravimetric-Geometric Geoid Models for Best Local Geoid Model of Benin City, Nig

The conversion of geometric as well as ellipsoidal heights from GNSS observations to practical heights for engineering constructions has necessitated the determination of the local geoid model of areas. Benin City is a developing area which requires a local geoid model for conversion of geometric heights to orthometric heights for physical developments in the area. This paper is on the best local geoid model of Benin City, Nigeria by comparing three gravimetric-geometric geoid models of the study area. GNSS and gravimetric observations were carried out on 49 points to respectively obtain their coordinates and absolute gravity values. The theoretical gravity values of the points were computed on the Clarke 1880 ellipsoid, subtracted from the absolute gravity values and corrected for the air (free air) to obtain the free air gravity anomalies of the points. The computed free air gravity anomalies were applied to compute the geoid heights of the points using the integration of the modified Stokes integral. Three geometric geoid surfaces (plane, second degree and third degree surfaces) were fitted to the computed gravimetric geoid heights using the least squares technique to obtain the gravimetric-geometric geoid models of the study area. The RMSE of the three gravimetric-geometric geoid models were computed to determine their (the models) accuracy. The three gravimetric-geometric geoid models were compared using their accuracy to obtain the most suitable geoid model of the study area. The results of the comparison showed that the third degree gravimetric-geometric geoid model is most suitable for application in the study area. It is recommended that ellipsoidal heights obtained from GNSS observation within Benin City, Nigeria should be converted to orthometric heights using the third degree geoid model.

Application of Surpac and Whittle Software in Open Pit Optimisation and Design

This paper studies the Surpac and Whittle software and their application in designing an optimised pit. Exploration data from Mpeasem Gold Mining Project (MGMP) is used as the primary input for the work. The work entails: block modelling of MGMP deposit; pit optimisation; analysis of the Pit NPV’s sensitivity to changes in gold price and mining cost; and detailed pit design. The deposit has undergone intense weathering, forming an oxidised gold deposit up to about 50 m in depth. Sections through the deposit were used to create a solid model of the orebody, which was divided into blocks to form a block model comprising unit blocks measuring 20 m x 20 m x 10 m. The block model grade was estimated using the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method, giving an average grade of 1.533 g/t with 22.79 Mt of ore. During the optimisation, a total of 82 optimal pit outlines were generated using the 3D Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. Pit 36 was chosen having the highest the Net Present Value (NPV) @ 10% of $338.60 million. The optimal pit had 21.19 Mt of ore at an average grade of 1.557 g/t. The NPV was very sensitive to gold price changes but marginally sensitive to mining cost changes. From the optimal pit, a detailed pit designed with circular ramp was selected over one with all-cut ramp since it had a higher expected revenue and lower stripping ratio. It is concluded that Surpac and Whittle software combine as a powerful tool for designing an optimal pit.

We describe an ecient Particle-Mesh algorithm for the Connection Machine CM-5. Our particular method parallelizes well and the computation time per time step decreases as the particles become more clustered. We achieve oating-point computation rates of 4{5 MFlops/sec/processing node and total operations (the sum of oating-point and integer arithmetic plus communications) of 5{10 MOps/sec/processing node. The rates scale almost linearly from 32 to 256 processors. Although some of what we discuss is speci c to the CM-5, many aspects (e.g., the computation of the force on a mesh) are generic to all implementations, and other aspects (e.g., the algorithm for assignment of the density to the mesh) are useful on any parallel computer.

Theory of Local Times

A model of a stationary universe is proposed. In this framework, time is defined as a local and quantum-mechanical notion in the sense that it is defined for each local and quantum-mechanical system consisting of finite number of particles. The total universe consisting of infinite number of particles has no time associated. It is a stationary bound state of the total Hamiltonian of infinite degrees of freedom. The quantum mechanics and the theory of general relativity are consistently united in this context if one uses this notion of local and quantum-mechanical time. As one of the consequences, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox is resolved. The Hubble red-shift is explained as a consequence of general relativity which is consistent with quantum mechanics. This does not require us to argue on the beginning nor the end of the universe. The universe just exists without time.

From the epoch of recombination (z  10 3 ) till today, the typical den- sity contrasts have grown by a factor of about 106 in a Friedmann universe with = 1. However, during the same epoch the typical gravitational po- tential has grown only by a factor of order unity. We present theoretical arguments explaining the origin of this approximate constancy of gravita- tional potential. This fact can be exploited to provide a new, powerful, approximation scheme to study the formation of nonlinear structures in the universe. The essential idea of this method is to evolve the initial dis- tribution of particles using a gravitational potential frozen in time. We carry out this scheme for several standard models including the CDM and HDM and show that the results match quite well with those obtained by exact numerical simulations. We compute di erent statistical measures of clustering and compare them for the description of nonlinear evolution.

Feasibility study of a Superheated Superconducting Granule detector for cold dark matter search

The presented results are part of a feasibility study of a Superheated Supercon- ducting Granule (SSG) device for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) detection. The sensitivity of SSG to nuclear recoils has been explored irradiat- ing SSG detectors with a 70MeV neutron beam proving that energy thresholds of ∼1keV can be reached in 30µm Zn and 17µm Sn granules. The successful irradiation experiments with neutrons encouraged us to plan a prototype SSG dark matter detector. The status of the project will be presented and the ex- pected counting rate for spin-independent WIMP interactions in SSG detectors will be discussed.
